The Initiative detail view is where you see and edit everything about one initiative: its status, owner, schedule, budget, executive summary, and the items linked to it. It opens in a panel beside the Roadmap, so you can keep your place while you work.

The new Lifecycle Manager UI is in Open Beta
You might notice occasional changes as we continue to refine this feature.

Who can use this feature?

  • Partners with Lifecycle Manager Pro or Lifecycle Manager X
  • Users with access to view Initiatives. To change an initiative, users also need access to update Initiatives, and to delete one, access to delete Initiatives.

See Manage roles and permissions in Lifecycle Manager.

How to open an initiative

On the Roadmap page, click an initiative card on the board or a row in the table. The detail view opens in a panel.

What's in the Initiative detail view

From top to bottom, the detail view shows:

  • Header: The initiative's name and client, an Internal label if the initiative is internal, and the context menu icon ().
  • Properties: Status and Owner always appear. Other properties, such as Contact, Date, Priority, hours, Budget, and Tags, appear once they're set.
  • Executive Summary: A description of the work and why it matters.
  • Outcomes: The Goal outcomes the initiative supports, if any.
  • Linked items: Goals, tasks, hardware, meetings, and PSA or Quoter records connected to the initiative.
  • Links & Attachments: Web links and files that support the initiative.
  • Created and updated details: Who created the initiative and when it was last changed.

How to change an initiative's details

Click any property to change it. Each change saves as soon as you make it.

  • Name: Click the name in the header to rename the initiative. An initiative must have a name.
  • Status: Shows your account's status labels. See Customizing Initiative statuses.
  • Owner: The team member responsible for the initiative. Every initiative has an owner, so you can change the owner but not remove it.
  • Contact: The client's point of contact for the initiative.
  • Date: Schedule the initiative in a quarter, or across a range of months or quarters. The schedule sets where the initiative appears on the Roadmap.
  • Estimated hours: Enter an estimate, with an optional maximum for a range.
  • Actual hours: You can record actual hours once the initiative's status is In Progress, On Hold, or Completed (or a custom status based on one of these).
  • Tags: See Managing tags.

To add a property that isn't shown yet, click it in the Add row under the properties.

About the budget

The budget is the initiative's one-time and recurring costs. To add or change it, click Budget in the properties (or in the Add row). The budget opens in its own window, where you save your changes.

For the full steps, see Using PSA products in Initiative budgets.

How to link items to an initiative

  1. Click Add linked item.
  2. Choose the type of item: Goal, Task, Hardware, Meeting, Ticket, Opportunity, or Quote.
  3. Select an existing item, or create a new one where the option is offered.

Keep in mind:

  • Ticket and Opportunity need a PSA integration. To create a ticket, the client must also be mapped to a company in your PSA.
  • Goal links and the Outcomes section need access to view Goals.
  • Hardware linked to an initiative counts as replacement hardware by default, so it's included in per-asset budget costs. Hardware marked as related stays linked to the initiative without adding to its budget.
  • Assessment items appear in Linked items when the initiative was created from an assessment. You can't add them from here.

How to add links and attachments

In Links & Attachments, you can:

  • Add a link: Enter a label and a web address. Links open in a new tab.
  • Upload a file: Choose a file or drag it onto the section. Files can be PDF, Word (DOC, DOCX), PowerPoint (PPT, PPTM, PPTX), image (JPG, JPEG, PNG, WEBP), or text (TXT) files, up to 25 MB each.
  • Preview a file: Click it. PDFs, images, and text files open in a preview; Word and PowerPoint files offer a download instead.

If a file has the same name as one already attached, Lifecycle Manager adds a number to the new file's name instead of replacing the existing file.

How to use the initiative's context menu

Click the context menu icon () in the header to:

  • Make internal or Make client-visible
Internal initiatives are for your team's planning only. They're hidden from the Roadmap by default and never appear when you present a Roadmap or in exports, Roadmap reports, or Deliverables.
  • Apply template…
Replace the initiative's name, executive summary, and budget with an Initiative template. If the initiative already has any of these, you're asked to confirm first.
  • Save as template…
Save the initiative's executive summary and budget as a new Initiative template.
  • Download Initiative PDF
Download the initiative as a PDF.
  • Delete Initiative
Permanently delete the initiative. You're asked to confirm first.

For more about templates, see Managing Initiative templates.
